Native to the cold-temperate regions of Europe and temperate Asia. Edible plant - fruits raw, cooked, or used as a seasoning in soups, dry, sweet and mealy; fruits can also be made into jellies or sherbets; fruits are distilled into a very strong alcoholic drink which combines a wine-like flavour with the headiness of vodka; seeds raw or cooked. Herbal plant - oil from the seeds is used with syrup as an electuary in the treatment of catarrh and bronchial affections; juice of the flowers has been used in the treatment of malignant fever; powder made from the mealy part of the fruit is an astringent medication that can be used in treating gastroenteritic complaint. Useful plant - can be grown as a hedge in exposed positions, tolerating maritime exposure.
