It is native to eastern and central North America. Ornamental plant. Herbal plant - roots have been used in the treatment of lung problems; a tea from this plant has been used as a cure for various lung ailments; a decoction of the dried root, or the chewed fresh root is placed on limbs as a stimulant. Usable plant - the whole plant, but especially the roots, contains the isobutylamide 'scabrin', which has been shown to have insecticidal properties, especially towards house flies.
