Native to China. Ornamental plant. Edible plant - flowers and young pods cooked, they are boiled and washed, possibly in that order so as to remove any bitterness. Herbal plant - the stems are strongly diuretic; the extracts of leaves are used to treat asthmatic problems, whooping cough, heart conditions, weak pulse, and bring down high malarial fevers besides treating skin woes.
