It is native to the Crimea Peninsula and the Caucasus Mountains in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Dagestan, where it grows on rocky slopes in oak, hornbeam, or beech forests.

Herbal plant - a tea made from the dried crushed petals of various peony species has been used as a cough remedy, and as a treatment for haemorrhoids and varicose veins.
Usable plant - a red dye is obtained from the flowers which has been used to dye cloth and paper; a fatty oil could be obtained from the seeds.
