It is native to Europe and North Africa. Edible plant - fruits raw or cooked; young leaves and shoots raw; dried leaves used as a tea. Herbal plant - mainly for treating disorders of the heart and circulatory system, especially angina; fruits are antispasmodic, cardiac, diuretic, sedative, tonic and vasodilator; bark is astringent, used in the treatment of malaria and other fevers.
