Native to parts of Asia and possibly Europe (sources differ on this). Edible plant - young shoots cooked and used like asparagus; young leaves eaten in salads; flowers raw or cooked. Herbal plant - used either externally or internally, can help treat varicose veins and haemorrhoids, though it requires a long-term treatment for the effect to be realised; flowering plant is antispasmodic, aromatic, carminative, diuretic, emollient, mildly expectorant, mildly sedative and vulnerary. Usable plant - used as a green manure; used as a nitrogen-fixing crop.
